M.R.M. Parrott's third title is a collection of his graduate Philosophy degree papers, named for the final paper, The Generation of X. Written during 1991-1995, these first philosophical works from the philosopher show dense but original ideas, deep questions, and irreverence for “professional” academic philosophers as gatekeepers. These works fit with the three monographs which followed, on Foucault, Deleuze, and Kant, and they also point to the bold Dynamism Series appearing later. More than just a collection of student papers, these pieces suggest careful reading.

As I wrote in the 2002 preface, the papers in this book were done for coursework and independent research, all representing a struggle. The tensions in these papers, coming from uninspiring professors, as well as periods of doubt in my own ideas, make a backdrop, and the works themselves point to my ongoing interests in subjectivity, aesthetics, logic and language, with cheerful willingness to ask questions. The cover art itself, Notebook, is a reversed photograph of my own notes from a course on Kant.
